Freelance Journalist Seriously wounded in Car Bomb Explosion in Mogadishu

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the attack on the freelance journalists’ car, wounding him seriously on Sunday evening on November 9, 2014, the latest attack in a series of attacks against the journalists and the media in Somalia.

A bomb believed to have been attached to the journalist’s car exploded while he was driving at Taleh street in Hodan distrct, near KM4 area in Mogadishu on Sunday evening, according to witnesses and media reports.

The freelance journalist identified as Nuurre Mohamed Ali, suffered serious leg injuries and was rushed to Madina hospital for treatment, according to Osman Abdullahi Guure, Director of Kulmiye Radio, where the journalist previously worked.

“Nuurre had worked at Kulmiye and Mustaqbal radio,” journalist Abdulkadir Farah Dulyar said, “He was also currently studying faculty of Mass Media at Plasma University.”

The Owner of Mustaqbal Radio, Mustafa Yasin, confirmed to NUSOJ that he had been working for Mustaqal radio, but left some three months ago.

“He was radio presenter and sometimes involved in marketing.” Mustafa Yasin, the owner of Mustaqbal radio said. Mustafa Yasin is also a chairman of a media owners association known as Network 2013.

No group claimed the responsibility of the attack and its not yet clear the reason behind the attack.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the attack in the strongest terms possible and calls for the Somali government to immediately launch an investigation into the case and bring the perpetrators to a court of justice.

“We condemn this heinous attack against our colleague and call for urgent investigation into the matter.” Mohamed Ibrahim, NUSOJ Secretary General said, “The attacks against the media professionals could pose serious challenges and could create climate of fear.”

“We pray for all our wounded colleagues for urgent recovery.” Mr. Ibrahim added.

On October 12, Unknown Gunmen opened fire at Television Abdirisak Jama Elmi known as “Black”, the Director of Somali Channel Television in Mogadishu office, while seated outside his home in Black Sea area, in Howlwadaag neighborhood in Mogadishu. He is currently recovering at Madina Hospital.
