GROUNDBREAKING BROADCAST FOR SOMALIS ABOUT SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

press releaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Egal Shidad: Stories of Somali Health will air a program simultaneously on television and radio to inform Somalis about sexual health issues.

Saint Paul, Minn. – Egal Shidad: Stories of Somali Health will air a program about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) on Tuesday November 10th at 7:30 p.m. on KFAI FM 90.3/106.7 and at 7:00 p.m. on SPNN Channel 19 on St. Paul Cable. The program is primarily intended for members of the Somali community, using the Somali language and aspects of Somali culture to relay information and address stigmas associated with STDs.
This program was created in response to conversations among local Somalis about the need to get accurate information about STDs out to the community.  It is a unique approach that combines health information and frank conversation about social aspects that factor into the transmission of STDs.  Contributors include Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed, local KFAI radio host Zuhur Ahmed, and a group of Somali university students.
This project is a collaborative effort between ECHO, Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota (CSCM), Producer Mukhtar Gaaddasaar, KFAI Fresh Air Radio, and SPNN.
On November 10 Egal Shidad: Stories of Somali Health will air on KFAI Radio, 90.3/106.7FM at 7:30 p.m. followed by a live call-in show.  The LIVE call-in show and celebration will take place at Karmel Mall in Minneapolis. The program will also air at 7 p.m. SPNN Channel 19 on St. Paul Cable.  For more info, visit www.newroutes.org/projects/egalshidad .
