Murder charge in sister’s bathtub stabbing

Staff Reporter — A Riverdale man has been charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of his 27-year-old sister.

Police allege that just before noon yesterday, Abdirasak Hassan, 24, attacked his sister, Jamila, stabbing her many times in the chest. She was left to die in the bathtub. He then reportedly turned the knife on himself and was taken to hospital with stab wounds to his arm.

Paramedics arrived at the townhouse complex on Munro St., just off Dundas St. E. near Broadview Ave and found Jamila in grave condition.

She was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

Neighbours said a third sibling was also inside at the time of the attack. The three apparently live together.

Relatives of the slain woman visited a home a few doors down from the crime a scene. A woman who identified herself as Jamila’s aunt said she was too distraught to speak to reporters.

“We’ve lost a person. I can’t even think about talking right now,” she said.

Edna Cacho lives next door to the family. She says they have always been a nice, quiet group.

Neighbours said Jamila and her family are Somali and have lived in the complex less than a year.

The area is part of a redeveloped community housing project, which includes more than 100 charming three-storey townhouses. It is a close-knit community. Doors are propped open, inviting neighbourly visits and everyone keeps a watchful eye when the street’s children play on the sidewalk.
