Somali’s Medical services minister Mr Aden Haji Ibrahim has pledged support for health facilities around the country, to improve service provision to the people.

The Transitional Federal Government minister was speaking after a visit to Banadir Hospital, one of the country’s leading medical facility built by Chinese aid for women and children in Mogadishu in 1977.

Abdirizak Hassan Ali, the hospital’s director, handed an assessment report to the minister to help him make informed decisions on how to improve the facility where hundred of Somalis are treated everyday.

“We hope the new Somali government will come up with a plan to help the hospitals that can hardly meet the massive demands for medical services,” said Dr Ali who heads the facility where tens of patients sleep on the floor.

“I have seen women and children suffering from various illnesses,” said the minister. “My government will do all it can to assist the hospitals.”

To start the process, the minister promised to seek financial help from the international community to complement for his government’s shortcomings.

Under the new new government of Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, Somalia plans to implement a number of projects to bring sanity to the country.

Siad Barre
Largely made of Diaspora Somalis, the 18 ministers government has pledges to improve security and public services, according to approved proposals.

Somalia has had no effectively functioning public health services since the collapse of General Mohamed Siad Barre regime in January 1991, which saw the medical facilities in Somalia, including the capital Mogadishu looted by rag-tag militias and thugs. Most of the qualified medical personnel fled Somalia for better jobs in the rest of the world, leaving the country with very few.
