Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday (February 27th) appointed General Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab as the new mayor of Mogadishu and governor of Benadir region.

Mungab replaces Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed Nur who served in the position since December 2010, Somalia’s Radio Mogadishu reported. No reason was given for the change.

Mungab was previously head of the Somali Military Court. His appointment comes in in the wake of a recent wave of al-Shabaab attacks in Mogadishu.
